Template Setup Guide – Product Options Personalizer

The Template feature in the Product Options Personalizer app allows you to create customizable product layouts for your Shopify store. Using the template editor, you can add personalization elements such as text, image uploads, and clipart, and position them directly on the product canvas.

Templates help you control how customers personalize products like T-shirts, mugs, posters, and other customizable items. They provide a structured design layout while still allowing customers to create their own unique designs.

To set up product personalization, you need to create a template, add customization elements, configure canvas controls, and choose either a blank canvas or a product image as the design base.

After adding the elements, you can position them on the canvas, configure how customers interact with them (move, resize, rotate, etc.), preview the template, and then save and assign it to a product to test the customization on your storefront.

This guideline will help you understand how to create and configure templates so customers can easily customize products on your store.

Steps:

  1. Open the Product Options Personalizer App: Go to Shopify Admin → Open Product Options Personalizer App → Navigate to the Templates section.

  1. Create a New Template: Click Create Template → Enter the Template Name (e.g., Branded T-Shirt) → Enable the Active toggle → Click Save to open the Template Editor

  1. Add Elements to the Template :Inside the template editor, you can add customization elements that allow customers to personalize the product.

Click + Add in the Elements panel and choose the element type.

  • Text – Add a Text Element to allow customers to personalize the product with their own text (such as names or messages). You can configure label, default text, font style, font size, alignment, colors, and character limits.

  • Image Upload – Add an Image Upload Element to allow customers to upload their own image or logo for product personalization. You can configure settings like label, cart label, default image, and maximum width/height to control the image size on the canvas.

  • Clipart / Image Choice – Add a Clipart Element to allow customers to choose graphics or icons from a predefined clipart library. You can configure settings like label, default image, image sets, and maximum width/height to control how the clipart appears on the canvas.

  • Canvas Controls: These options allow interaction with the label on the canvas. Depending on which options are enabled, customers can move, resize, rotate, or delete the label. If all controls are disabled, the label will remain visible but cannot be modified.

  1. Configure Product Side & Background: Template Editor → Click ⋮ (three-dot menu) next to Front → Select Edit Side → Enter Side Name → Choose Background Type (Product Images or Blank Canvas) → Select or upload Background Image using Change Image / Choose from Media → Click Save.

  • Blank Canvas : Blank Canvas creates an empty design area without a product image. You can set the canvas width and height (pixels) and choose a background color to define the design space where customers can add text, images, or clipart.
Note: Blank Canvas creates an empty design area without a product image. This is useful when you want customers to design freely or when the product preview image is not required.

  • Product Images: Product Images use the product’s existing images as the canvas background. This helps customers see how their text, images, or clipart will appear directly on the product. You can change the background image, select one from the media library, or choose from the product’s available images to display on the canvas.

  1. Position Elements on the Canvas : Once an element is added → Drag it onto the canvas area → Move it to the desired position → Resize it using the corner handles → The canvas shows how the customization will appear on the product.

  1. Preview the Template: Click Preview in the top-right corner → Test text input, image uploads, and clipart selections → Make adjustments if necessary before saving.

  1. Save the Template: Click Save → Ensure the Active toggle is enabled → Assign the template to the relevant product → Customers will now be able to customize the product using this template.

Frontstore : **Once the template is assigned to a product, customers will be able to **personalize the product directly from the product page.
